Employment Contracts

An employment contract can be made by word of mouth, but it is much better put in writing. Employers should provide each employee with a written employment contract within two months of their joining.

Employment contracts need not be over elaborate, but must include core provisions such as job title, place of work, rate of pay, hours of work, holiday and sick pay, disciplinary and grievance procedure, pension rights and notice periods. Employees are now entitled to a minimum national wage, paid holiday and a minimum period of notice.

Other provisions may restrict employees from poaching their employer's customers after they leave and allow employers to make changes in employment terms to meet new business demands.
